Elementary school was the foundation of my education, junior high the architecture, and high school the actual roof. But college is rounding the corner of my short-lived life, and soon, the final touches of this learning experience will be built.
As the wires of my high school career wear thin, I begin to look past the everyday worries of the typical teen, and realize that those once frightening college legends don’t seem so scary anymore. As a freshman, the ideas of freedom and independence were strangers to my adolescent mind. Friends were the forte of life, and school was merely the mode of transportation that brought me to them.
I smile smugly as I reminisce upon these once immature thoughts and see that although the road to self-discovery was painful, the journey has only begun.
I will wade through deep water, climb steep mountains, and even topple over in defeat. But my spirit will not be broken. I will overcome my fear of transition and move toward the place where knowledge will enlighten (and sometimes burn) itself into my always growing mind.
In less than a year, I will be a senior. My computer screen will be crammed with applications, my desk draped with acceptance or rejection letters, and my bag filled with university brochures.
But instead of worrying about the future to come, my mind will be at ease knowing that the once skeletal frame of knowledge will be built, furnished, and ready to move into.
A reflection of my high school career along with the fears I once faced about college.
